First peel the outer skin from the onion.
Trim the roots from the base of the onion, being careful not to remove the root.
Slice the stem top from the onion.
Slice the onion in half through the root.
Place the cut side of the onion flat on the board.
Hold the onion with the left hand.
Place the first slice of the onion with the point of the knife at the root end. Do not cut through the root.
